There\u2019s an important question frequently posed by those approaching this sector for the first time: <strong>how many electric charging points are there in Italy<\/strong> today, and how feasible are long journeys with an electric car? The most recent figures from 2026 paint an extremely positive picture: by March 2026, the public charging infrastructure had exceeded the impressive figure of over 78,000 stations installed across the country, 68,000 of which are already active and fully operational. This is not just a statistic; it\u2019s the result of a joint effort that has led to huge growth over just four years.<\/p>\n<p>This massive expansion of infrastructure is closely linked to the maturing of the <strong>electric car market in Italy<\/strong>, which by early 2026 had seen the number of battery-powered vehicles on the road comfortably exceed the 400,000 mark. The steady rise in new car registrations, driven both by European directives and by greater environmental awareness amongst consumers, requires a solid, reliable support network. In this context, <strong>electric car charging points<\/strong> form the backbone of the entire system. From short urban commutes to long summer motorway journeys, every type of drive needs efficient, reliable and readily available charging points.<\/p>\n<p>However, operators are not focusing solely on increasing the number of devices installed, but primarily on <strong>power output<\/strong>. The market is gradually shifting away from slow AC charging towards fast and ultra-fast DC charging. Almost 30% of the charging points in operation in Italy now offer high-power charging. The installation of <strong>infrastructure<\/strong> able to deliver 150 kW or more is rising at a staggering rate, particularly along motorway corridors, which in 2026 are now home to almost 1,500 charging stations. If the system is to cope with the surge of the next million electric cars, it will not be enough to focus solely on major urban hubs or motorway service stations. The continual expansion of the network of electric charging points in Italy is breaking down the psychological and practical barriers that until a few years ago were holding users back from abandoning internal combustion engines.
