How far can I drive my car once fully charged? This is the top parameter taken into account by consumers, especially those who are new to this type of mobility. While <b>technological advances<\/b> have enabled achievements we could scarcely have imagined until recently, there is still a very diverse landscape to navigate, which changes based on numerous factors. So how can we choose an <b>electric car<\/b> with a good level of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/topics\/in-depth\/electric-vehicles?\"><b>autonomy<\/b><\/a> without the risk of making a purchase unsuited to our lifestyle?<\/p>\n<p>To try to answer this question, we have to consider a variety of different needs, the advantages new <b>technologies<\/b> can offer, and the solutions on the horizon.<\/p>\n<h2>Different autonomy of electric cars<\/h2>\n<p>First of all, it\u2019s important to clarify what <b>autonomy<\/b> means. In short, it\u2019s the distance an electric vehicle can travel between a 100% charge and an empty battery at 0%. The first point to clarify is that there is no standard electric car autonomy range, and that the distance travelled varies depending on several factors.<\/p>\n<p>The most significant of these are <b>battery capacity<\/b>, <b>engine efficiency<\/b>, <b>driving style<\/b>, and the <b>weight and size of the vehicle<\/b>. Other factors include <b>external conditions<\/b> such as temperature, use of air conditioning or the presence of additional loads.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2042\" src=\"https:\/\/iplanet.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ricarica_auto_elettrica.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking at actual figures, on the market today we can find <b>electric city cars<\/b> with a range of around <b>250-300 km<\/b>, perfect for those who travel almost exclusively in the city. Moving up the categories, <b>saloons<\/b> and <b>SUVs<\/b> can easily exceed <b>500-600 km<\/b>, in some cases reaching close to <b>800 real km<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge does not stop here, however. Some manufacturers have also developed <b>electric cars with a range of 1,000 km<\/b>, which will soon become reality. And there are even more ambitious experimental projects under way, such as the idea of an <b>electric car with a range of 2,000 km<\/b>, which aims to revolutionise the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Although this variety of options offers great opportunities, it can be confusing. The <b>electric car<\/b> with the longest range is not always the best choice: it all depends on how we\u2019ll be using the vehicle.<\/p>\n<h2>How to choose a car that meets your needs<\/h2>\n<p>The key question remains: how much <b>autonomy<\/b> do we really need?<\/p>\n<p>A useful tip is to start by analysing our daily <b>movements<\/b>. If we live in the city and travel 30-40 km a day, a model with a range of <b>300 km<\/b> is more than sufficient for several days of use without charging, while someone who often makes long journeys or works outside of town might want to look at <b>500-700 km<\/b> models.<\/p>\n<p>For <b>urban commuters<\/b> travelling between work and home in the city, <b>practicality<\/b>, <b>agility<\/b> and <b>short charging times<\/b> are the most important factors. <b>C-segment cars<\/b> with a range of <b>250-300 km<\/b> are ideal for this purpose.<\/p>\n<p><b>Families with children<\/b>, who often make longer trips for outings or weekends away, may find an <b>electric SUV<\/b> with a <b>500-600 km<\/b> range more suitable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Travelling professionals<\/b> who make long drives every week might find <b>electric cars with more autonomy<\/b> suitable to avoid problems.<\/p>\n<p>Another aspect not to be underestimated is the <b>charging network available<\/b>. Those living in a housing complex without charging stations, or who cannot install a <b>Wallbox<\/b> at home, might need to opt for a model with a longer range to avoid stopping too often. In other words, it\u2019s not just a matter of choosing the <b>biggest battery<\/b>, but of finding the perfect balance between <b>range<\/b>, <b>comfort<\/b> and the availability of <b>charging infrastructures<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, in many cases, these issues can be resolved thanks to the <b>latest generation of fuelling stations<\/b>, which allow you to charge your vehicle in no time at all.<\/p>\n<h2>How ultra-fast charging technologies can make travelling easier and more convenient<\/h2>\n<p>Alongside the issue of <b>autonomy<\/b>, we have to consider <b>charging options<\/b>. There is no point in having a car with a range of 1,000 km, if charging is excessively slow or complicated. Fortunately, technology is moving fast in this direction.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/iplanet.eu\/en\/ultrafast-charging\/\"><b>ultrafast charging stations<\/b><\/a>, able to deliver power of up to <b>400 kW<\/b>, are becoming increasingly widespread. The effective <b>range<\/b> of a vehicle depends on a number of <b>factors<\/b> that impact the driving experience.<\/p>\n<h3>Not just a question of battery<\/h3>\n<p><b>Energy efficiency<\/b> is the first factor. Two <b>electric car models<\/b> with identical batteries can behave very differently depending on their <b>weight<\/b>, <b>aerodynamic resistance<\/b> and the <b>technical solutions<\/b> adopted by the manufacturer. In short, <b>consumption<\/b> is determined by the <b>vehicle as a whole<\/b> and the <b>structure<\/b> of all its parts.<\/p>\n<h3>The right software<\/h3>\n<p>Another crucial aspect regards the <b>onboard software<\/b>. <b>Journey planning systems<\/b> that suggest <b>charging stops<\/b> and calculate <b>optimal routes<\/b> can reduce <b>range anxiety<\/b> and offer peace of mind by removing the unpredictability that can turn trips into an <b>odyssey<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is the question of the <b>battery<\/b>, the very heart of the <b>electric car<\/b>: it is always important to check the <b>lifespan<\/b> and the <b>warranty coverage<\/b>, in terms of both years and kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, <b>future value<\/b> should not be underestimated: vehicles with a longer <b>range<\/b> tend to maintain their price better over time, which is an important <b>strategic factor<\/b> in a rapidly changing market.<\/p>\n<h2>The future is just around the corner<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve already reached a <b>turning point<\/b>. While ten years ago <b>range anxiety<\/b> was the main obstacle to the spread of <b>electric vehicles<\/b>, today the perspective has shifted. While we wait for cars with a <b>1,000 or 2,000 km range<\/b> to become more widespread and affordable, <b>technology<\/b> is progressing in leaps and bounds.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the new <b>ultrafast charging stations<\/b>, mere <b>battery capacity<\/b> is becoming less and less important.
