Siemens Smart Infrastructure has been selected by IPlanet, the joint venture between IP and Macquarie Capital EV Asset Holding, to support the electrification of its fuel station network across Italy. Under a new framework agreement, Siemens will deliver the infrastructure for over 120 ultrafast EV charging stations to be developed over the coming years. The programme focuses on strategically located urban and extra-urban service areas, particularly near high-traffic or commercial zones.
These next-generation stations are designed as decentralised, low-carbon energy systems, combining high performance and speed. Each station will offer up to six ultrafast charging outlets, enabling simultaneous high-power charging for EVs in under 15 minutes, with potential to expand in the future.
All sites will be equipped with advanced digital technologies that support multiple user experiences, from integrated POS terminals for credit card payments in compliance with AFIR regulations, to app- and QR code-based activations. Charging stations will also feature interactive screens capable of delivering multimedia services and ensuring full accessibility for users with disabilities.
The network, composed of hundreds of 300–400kW charging points, will be remotely monitored through multiple, independent connectivity channels, delivering high standards of availability and system reliability.
Each site will be powered by Siemens medium- and low-voltage distribution systems, including scalable compact substations to manage increased power needs and enable remote monitoring. These substations will also support renewable energy generation at local level, where available.
Initial turnkey installations, including photovoltaic systems on charging canopies, building rooftops, and parking areas, as well as BESS energy storage systems are scheduled to be commissioned within the current calendar year: some of these stations are already being prepared to support heavy vehicles (EV trucks).
“Among the key challenges on the path to the clean energy era are two interconnected bottlenecks linked to the grid: the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) charging points and the need to ensure the stability of increasingly decentralised networks. Both issues are becoming increasingly relevant with the convergence of e-mobility and the distributed injection of energy resources.
We are proud to partner with IPlanet on a strategic project that will support the electrification of mobility in our country,” said Giuseppe Amari of Siemens Smart Infrastructure.
“Our goal is to deliver high technological standards while building the infrastructure quickly and flexibly, ensuring full scalability across the entire project and accelerating its implementation,” Amari added.
